Colorado Springs is the home of Focus On The Family, an organization that is strongly opposed to gay rights which can certainly be intimidating to anyone new in the city looking to reach out and relate to those in our gay community. Although Colorado Springs is very conservative and mostly Republican, there are indeed many fun things to do here such as GLBT nightlife, entertainment & community outreach. If you are new to Colorado Springs, we highly recommend stopping by the Colorado Springs Pride Center to familiarize yourself with events going on in the community and to find out what you can to to contribute and become one with your city.

So, last night I went to a sneak preview of Club Q’s Janet Jackson Show, which is this Friday. I was impressed with how much pumped-up, choreographed entertainment this is going to be. Q’s regular Friday night hostess and star of Evolution, drag queen Lynda DeSade, and her fantastic dance choreographer, Alex Valdez (from the burlesque troupe Peaks & Pasties), have been working really hard with their crew — an expanded Evolution (drag/variety team at the Q), which includes Melissa Nugin, Chris Todd, and the always-impressive singer, Alphuh Omega. And, celebrity DJ/drag queen Kyree Myst will perform and spin live on-stage as well.

The tribute to Janet was Lynda’s idea and she says, “I want to give this the feel of a Janet concert, with the lights, dancing, live singing, recorded video on the big screen, live video of performers on and off-stage, oh, and more dancing. This will be more ambitious than the I AM show last year.”

Big Shout’s recommendation on this one is that it’s definitely something you’re gonna want to go see..a drag/variety/dance show on steroids all set to Janet songs. Get there early enough (before 9) and you get in free. The next night is their Pink Party, so, it’s gonna be a busy weekend at the Q. Says Miss DeSade, “If we can pull off a Janet Jackson tribute show, we can do anything.” Considering it’s the same people who brought you the I AM show last year. My guess is they will; I’ll be there.  —BigShout

Today’s front page: Gov. John Hickenlooper said Wednesday that he would call a special session to make sure there was ample time to debate a civil unions bill. At times emotional, Hickenlooper said not allowing same-sex couples to form civil unions was “depriving people of their civil rights.”
