Colorado Springs GLBT Community Coming Together

Over the years, the GLBT community in Colorado Springs has made some drastic changes which have not only affectd our businesses, but our way of thinking as a whole. Colorado Springs is the home of Focus On The Family, an organization that is strongly opposed to gay rights which can certainly be intimidating to anyone new in the city looking to reach out and relate to those in our gay community. Although Colorado Springs is very conservative and mostly Republican, there are indeed many fun things to do here such as GLBT nightlife, entertainment & community outreach. If you are new to Colorado Springs, we highly recommend stopping by the Colorado Springs Pride Center to familiarize yourself with events going on in the community and to find out what you can to to contribute and become one with your city.

Colorado Springs is also home to its own gay mens choir called Out Loud. We highly recommend that you get tickets to one of their shows, and encourage you to join if you can sing!

Out Loud: The Colorado Springs Men’s Chorus exists to build community through music.

The Denver Post: Vows For Action

Today’s front page: Gov. John Hickenlooper said Wednesday that he would call a special session to make sure there was ample time to debate a civil unions bill. At times emotional, Hickenlooper said not allowing same-sex couples to form civil unions was “depriving people of their civil rights.”

Do you guys think Gov. Hickenlooper’s emotions were true? Or do you think this was just a ploy to pull in extra votes? Leave us your thoughts in the comments box.

Sowing Your Wild Oats

Check out this book launch! The book includes a story about the first time the author went to see a drag show at Club Q in Colorado Springs! – Big Shout

Book Launch Party

Please join us for the launch of
The Oat Project,
a debut work
by Jene’ Jackson

Poor Richard’s Bookstore, 320 N Tejon St, Colorado Springs

March 2, 5:30-7:30pm

It’s never too late to sow your wild oats, and new author Jené Jackson is living proof. At the age of 37, married and the mother of three, Jackson discovered that there were critical gaps in her life story. Where others had tales of mishaps, joyrides, benders, and acts of rebellion, her life had followed a path circumscribed by her preacher’s daughter upbringing. Determined to live more fully, Jackson embarked upon a 14-week mission to check off 25 wild oats, including getting drunk, clubbing and getting a tattoo…resulting in The Oat Project, a memoir.

Jené’s debut book will be published on all e-book platforms in a return to what traditional publishing used to be—the serial. Jackson will release 1-2 chapters every 2 weeks starting on March 2. In between each launch, join her in creating a place to dig into the Wild Oat issue on her blog and forum. Come help her kick it off at The Oat Project Launch Party! Be at Poor Richard’s Bookstore in Colorado Springs, on Friday, March 2nd, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Jackson will read the Prologue from the book and invite attendees to share their own oat-sowing tales in old-fashioned popcorn testimony style. Come in costume if you wish–Schoolgirl or Godzilla!  (Why? That will be revealed in Jackson’s Prologue). Extra points to those in Godzilla as a Schoolgirl. ;-)

Young Filmmaker to Make Documentary on Gay Discrimination

Ryan James Yezak, a producer/director in Los Angeles has registered with Kickstarter.com, a creative fundraising platform, to produce a documentary on gay, lesbian, and bisexual discrimination. He is asking for 1/3 of the money through Kickstarter, $50,000. The project details were posted on Kickstarter on January 9th and mini-donations of at least a dollar are being taken through March 9th. Thanks to a viral preview video, Ryan has raised over $96,000.

Ryan’s words:

I want to make a documentary that encompasses all areas in which we are discriminated against. The general population is not aware that discrimination against the gay community goes beyond marriage & bullying. There is far too much hate directed towards our community and I want to capture that hate on camera. In addition, I want to explore where this hate comes from, why it continues to exist, and what we must do to get rid of it. A better solution is needed because the solution we have right now isn’t working fast enough.

I am not a second class citizen. You are not a second class citizen. Right now, the laws in place (and lack thereof) say that we are. Let’s change that.

Take a look at the preview video and let shoutocracy know what you think on our blog or on our facebook.

Governor Pushes Civil Unions

From Governor Hickenlooper’s State of the State address on Thursday:

“We don’t believe we should legislate what happens inside a church or place of worship, but government should treat all people equally,” he said. “It’s time to pass civil unions.
